Poker players observe verbal and non-verbal information called “tells” to help them win at the gaming tables. Reading mannerisms, habits, voice patterns, and body movements provide gamblers with valuable insights into an opponent's thoughts and cards. 

You can use the same technique when you are on the telephone with your customers. You should because your customers are observing your telephone “tells.”
